Some of Ethereum's core developers have publicly stated their approval of "proto-danksharding"
EIP-4844 will likely be incorporated in a future update, according to Ethereum developers. EIP-4844 seeks to increase Ethereum's scalability beyond what is possible with Layer 2 solutions.
Developers have agreed to work on the proposed feature by adding EIP-4844, also known as “proto-danksharding,” to a list marked “considered for inclusion (CFI).”
They will implement this feature on the mainnet sometime next year if everything goes according to plan.
The Shanghai upgrade, which aims to give validators access to staking withdrawals, may launch concurrently with or after the proposal.
EIP-4844 seeks to increase Ethereum's scalability beyond what is possible with Layer 2 solutions.
It will introduce a brand-new type of transaction format to Ethereum called "shard blob transactions,” enabling Ethereum nodes to temporarily store and access off-chain data to meet the scaling requirements of blockchain applications.
With Layer 2 rollup solutions like Optimism and Arbitrum, where transactions are already five to ten times cheaper than the Ethereum base layer, this feature is meant to make Ethereum even more affordable.
"Remember that EIP-4844 introduces a new fee market to Ethereum for transient data. Instead of stealing regular gas, rollups would use this for data availability.
As fees could be reduced by 100x or more, this is a game-changer for the rollup-centric roadmap,” said Liam Horne, the CEO of OP Labs, the company that created the Optimism network.
